Bogdkhan Mountain, one of the world oldest protected areas, is located in the south west of the Khentii Range. This mountain is on the boundary of steppe and forest-steppe natural zones. The mountain also marks the southern border of the Siberian forests and the Mongolian forests. A round trip circulating the mountain is 160 km. the mountain covers 41.6 thousand sq km area. The highest points are Tsetsee Gun (2268 m). Then, Tushee gun (2256 m), Ikh baga tengeriin range (2094 m), east Shireet (2150 m), west Shireet (2004 m). Ancient plateau surface dominates above 2000 m. and peaks are plateau and domed with many taluses. This mountain has more than 30 glens including 20 glens with small rivers and streams. For example: Turgen glen is 36.2 km long, west and east Zuun mod 33.4 km long, Chuluut 23.1 km, Khurkhree 32.6 km. West, northwest and summit plateau are covered by cedar forest, and southwest and south sides are covered by spruce forest. Pine trees dominate in southwest while larch trees are in north and southeast. There are 587 species of plants growing here, including 30 species of medical plants and 16 species of rare plants. 54 species of mammals and 194 species of bids inhabit in the mountain. According to an ancient Mongolian legend, the mountain was called Khan Mountain because Khan (king) of Khereid tribe protected this mountain when this tribe was around the Tuul River and in north of Bogd Khan Mountain. Then, Ikh Khuree (Ulaanbaatar) was settled north of the river and the Bogd (head of Mongolian Buddhism) lived the area. Therefore, the word ‘Bogd’ was added to the name of Khan Mountain. The mountain started to be officially protected in 1778. Police officers have been protecting 28 glens of the mountain since 1908. At that time, the Bogd used to give permission to enter the protected glens. Worshipping ceremony of the mountain was interrupted during 1921 to 1995. However, the ceremony has been restored in the latter years according to a decree of the Mongolian President. The mountain has held the status of Strictly Protected area since 1960. In 1996, the mountain was registered in “The world biosphere reserve network”.
